Today I have a special treat for you . . . sorta like a special prize in a box of cereal when you were a kid. Remember that?
And best of all your special prize comes with no strings attached.
But first a quick word from our sponsors—just KIDDING.
Hey, a little humor never hurt, right? Hell, who am I kidding anyway . . . I AM the sponsor and damn proud of it.
Ok, it’s time to get serious and crack open this issue. After all, the whole point these posts are not to entertain you, rather I’m here . . . Helping you build that bridge to where you want to be.
So I’ve been doing a LOT of thinking about my biz and helping my clients rake in serious dough and I asked myself, “Am I an innovator or an imitator?”
The proud truth is that I’m a bit of both! I consider myself steeped in solid principles of mail order and direct response marketing. I’ve also been mentored by some of the best of the best in the biz. These folks include direct marketers, copywriters and sales professionals and business advisors.
Plus, I’ve single handedly engineered a few hybrid strategies that have produced serious windfalls for myself (and my clients). But that’s another story for another day.
But pure original strategies, well, naw not entirely. When I was a youngin my daddy told me time and time again, “Son if it works, don’t fix it!” I had a really curious habit of tearing apart ‘curb treasures’ like bikes, thrown out lawn mowers, even appliances.
Heck, some of them I could actually put back together without help! And I got these treasures to work again.
Those childhood lessons helped greatly as I began my mail order marketing adventure some 25 odd years ago. This ‘tearing stuff’ apart mindset showed up just in time when I first started learning how to write sales copy. I still do it today.
In fact, one of my favorite mentors, mail order legend and owner of Wilshire Book Company, Melvin Powers dedicated an entire chapter of his course, “How To Get Rich In Mail Order” on how to copycat successful mail order operations.
And by the way, "How To Get Rich In Mail Order" is one of the best courses I've taken on running a mail order business. I encourage you to get your hands on this course. You won't be sorry!
The idea is to find mail order businesses that are successful and “copy” their operation. Dive in, ask questions and see how they handle marketing, customer service, how long it takes to receive your order and of course pay close attention and take notes on your findings.
Likewise, I challenge you to grab a sales letter, landing page or your favorite direct response advertisement that’s a proven winner and dissect it.
If you really want to get good at writing sales copy, handwrite these winning ads out word for word. You’ll soon get a feel how the copy flows together and gets people to buy.
Tear it apart and look at all the constituent parts, headline, body copy, offers, proof elements, guarantees and the close. Examine it and see why it’s a winner. Then see how you can apply these principles and elements to your copy and promotions.
This brings up the notion of starting a swipe file. This collection of proven, successful collection of killa ads really can boost ideas for you own promotions.
A Word Of Caution: Do NOT copy these ads word for word for your own promotions. Rather, use these ads to stimulate ideas for writing your own ads.
You know plagiarism is stealing. So, don’t do it. Again, use these ads as idea generators and to get a basic feel for the market but don’t steal.
Ok. End of sermon.
So, who wants a prize? You? How about you? Yes! Yes!
You got it!
The prize for today is a pretty cool little swipe file that I’ve put together, just for you. And all you got to do is raise your hand and let me know that you want it.
