Can you feel it? It’s that zapped feeling of “don’t give a damn.” It’s that feeling your world is piling up on you or sometimes it’s like the walls are closing in, doors are slamming shut.
You’re moving like a slug coupled with little to no ambition to write that next assignment with critical deadlines breathing down your neck.
Hey, it’s ok. If you’re a creative or knowledge worker . . . it’s bound to happen at some point.
It’s called burn out and it eventually happens to all of us.
So if you know it’s going to happen . . . embrace it!
I’m here to tell you . . . all hope is not lost.
There is a cure!
And it’s a really simple one: Take a break.
Some folks call it “Miller Time” – some folks call it “playtime” – whatever you call it it’s that special time when you decide to step back and do something fun – and it should be something other than your day to day “work.”
Choose your “playtime” well and make it count.
Here are some things that have worked well for me:
Long walks – I’m lucky to have a walking area near where I live. The surrounding views are spectacular. When you see something other than a computer screen, it down right exhilarating. Breathe in some fresh mountain air while you are at it. It does a body good!
Reading a good book by my favorite author seems to be a great way to take my mind off projects that I’m working on. “Losing” myself in whatever the book world brings, works wonders for me.
Sometimes I simply head to the garage with a brew and cigar in-hand and just do absolutely nothing.
Jumping on my motorcycle and heading to the mountains is always a great way to spend the day. It’s only a day trip to the beautiful NC mountains from where I hang my hat so this little adventure is doable practically time (weather permitting of course). And the exhilarating ride always clears my head, recharges my batteries and gets me excited for my next assignment.
You could up the game a bit more and take a freaking vacation or consider a “staycation” as I often do. Either way, you can’t lose.
I hope this stimulates you to hush your “workaholic self” and just do something to get away from your work for a while and recharge.
I’m pretty sure that once you start doing this, you’ll feel refreshed, be more productive and gain a new appreciation for what you’re doing.
In my humble opinion, I consider time as my most valuable commodity. And I make sure that I’m doing things which honor this.
I hope you’ll soon embrace your “Miller Time” as an essential tool to keep the creative juices flowing, your sanity intact, and business running like a well-oiled machine.
Heck, I’ve known folks in the copywriting world who regularly take extended Miller Times without missing a beat. It’s an essential part of their biz routine.
